What I read a couple of weeks ago
I was browsing the Fullerton library looking for something to read when this caught my eye as one of the “Featured books.” I was surprised by how good it was! From the cover, you can see that it got a lot of awards. It’s a graphic novel about a 2nd generation Chinese American boy’s experience, and I loved it. It was hilarious and complex and richly intertwined with...

#27: USS Maine
american-apologies:
In 1898, after American demands for the resolution of the Cuban fight for independence were rejected by Spain, we felt it was our time to expand globally, so we looked for a chance to annex Spain’s remaining overseas territories. We sent the USS Maine to hang out in Havana while Cubans rioted against imperial oppression. On February 15, 1898, at 9:40 p. m. the Maine sank in...

Kisses.
The wall slam
You know this kiss, the passionate one that sends you ricocheting off the furniture, slammed up against the wall and maybe even lifted off you feet a little bit. The kind of kiss where you end up with your legs wrapped around the guys waist and your tongue hanging out, panting and out of breath. Yeah, that kiss.
The “why am I on this bed and where did my shirt go?” kiss
Some kisses...

Funyuns.
After not eating this since like 8th grade, I suddenly felt like buying them at the Dollar Tree.
Man, what a disappointment! They were not nearly as delicious as I remember them being… massively salty, acrid, and they made me feel gross at the end, much like how I feel after eating Doritos.
I guess some things are better left… in the past.
Why do we SHOUT when we are ANGRY?
umsuny:drinagale:paolomiguel:shortshitt:followandreblog:happythings:mistikos: believemelove: snowflakeskiss:
One day, a professor asked his students ‘Why do we SHOUT instead of speak when we are ANGRY?’ All the students thought for a while. One answered ‘Because we lost our cool. That’s why we SHOUT.’ Asked the professor again, ‘But the person is just right next to you, why can’t we talk softly...

Jose Rizal's last poem
written at Fort Santiago in the days leading up to his execution. Originally untitled, but later titled “Mi Ultimo Adios,” by Mariano Ponce.
Farewell, my adored Land, region of the sun caressed, Pearl of the Orient Sea, our Eden lost, With gladness I give you my Life, sad and repressed; And were it more brilliant, more fresh and at its best, I would still give it to you for your...

Fort Santiago.
“In 1592, Spanish conquerers under Gen. Miguel Lopez de Legazpi began building a stone fortress at the mouth of the Pasig River on Luzon to defend against Moro invaders. The fort was badly damaged in WWII, but today it is a national monument and a popular gathering place for lovers and artists.”
This site had originally been the palace and kingdom of Rajah Suleiman, the last ruler of...

fin, moleskine
I just filled up my first Moleskine.
And I left all my backups in Berkeley!! Rawr!! I feel like I’m really starting to rip through the notebooks that people have given me, knowing that I’m a writer (or, at least, that I say I’m one). And I have two weeks before I get back to Berkeley… so I guess I’m going to have to use the little red moleskine Deanne gave me, even...

lechon.
“Lechon, derived from the Spanish word leche, meaning ‘milk,’ is… in keeping with its name, a suckling pig… that still feeds on its mothers milk… preferred because its flesh stays tender while its skin becomes crispy.”
I did not know that’s where the word came from. And I did not know that they still fed on their mother’s milk…...

I’ve been reading children’s books on the Philippines, because I realized my education up to this point has been lacking on the most basic historical facts. Even with my Southeast Asian Studies major.

“Over four centuries of foreign rule ended when the Republic of the Philippines was established on July 4, 1946.
Marcos and Martial Law
The Philippine people enjoyed democracy for twenty-six years before losing it again. On September 21, 1972, President Ferdinand Marcos declared martial law.”
…that sentence is simultaneously very funny and very sad.

Yaki udon.
I had Yaki Udon today at Sushi Express on Commonwealth and Dale. It’s this relatively new place, and Eileen, her boyfriend, and I decided to check it out. It was a cute little place with totally affordable food, a great atmosphere, and great service. I should bring my parents there!
My first time having yaki udon. So pleasing! I looove thick noodles. It’s kind of like chow mein, but...

Today, I had milk tea for the first time.

I’ve tried Thai milk tea and almond milk tea before but never straight milk tea. And it was warm too. Wow, I’ve really been missing out. It was so sweet, and the boba was so soft. It...

When my mom was dying of cancer, my dad had to keep working to keep his health insurance. His midsize company has a program by which employees can transfer paid time off to one another. A person in HR sent out an email explaining his situation. Within 3 hours, my father had 12 weeks of paid vacation. Strangers’ sacrifices GMH.

The Iron Giant and Godzilla
I did my final project for Theater 119 on comparing these two films. The Iron Giant is my favorite movie EVERRRrrr! But did you know that Godzilla is really considered a tragic hero in Japan? Godzilla is actually a really sad movie about the Cold War and nuclear weapons. The Iron Giant is a tragic hero too, and the movie deals with those same themes.
I think I did pretty well on my final....

Ora Pronobis. (Fight for Us)
We watched this film in Philippine film class, and it was honestly one of the best films I’ve ever seen. It was so moving. Such a ghastly picture of the Philippines in the two years after People’s Power.
My poor country has suffered so much. I feel like there has never been a time where it has not been suffering, except maybe before the Spaniards came. I mean, then, the Philippines...
